MURWILLUMBAH TO TWEED

HEADS RAILWAY.

THE SCHEME REJECTED.

The expediency of constructing a line of railway from Murwillumbah to the Tweed Heads was further considered yesterday by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. The debate on the motion of Mr. Moore, seconded by Mr. Hughes, "That in the opinion of the committee it is not ex-pedient that the proposed railway, as re-ferred to them by the Legislative Assembly, be carried out," was resumed.

Mr. Hawthorne moved as an amendment the omission of the word "not" from before the

word "expedient."

The amendment was negatived by four votes to three, the voting being:- Against the

amendment, Messrs. Moore, Hughes, Camp-

bell, and M'Gowan; for the amendment; Messrs. M'Farlane, Kethel, and Hawthorne.

A further amendment, in the name of Mr. Kethel,- "That the committee recommend

that the railway be carried out with an alteration, by which it will cross the Tweed near Murwillumbah, so as not to impede navigation of the river," was also lost, the voting being the same as for the previous

amendment.

The original motion was then put and car-

ried.
