THE LATE REV. WILLIAM

LUMSDAINE.

The Rev. William Lumsdaine, late rector of Christ Church, Gladesville, who died at his residence, the Rectory, Gladesville, on Monday afternoon, at the advanced age of 78 years, after an illness ex-tending over some six or eight months, was the third son of William Lumsdaine, formerly an officer of one of the British regiments stationed in India The Lumsdaines (or Lumsdens), of Blanerne, are a well-known famiily in the county of Berwick Upon the death of his father from cholera, deceased was sent to England to the charge of his uncle, the     late Rev. Edwin Sandys Lumsdaine, rector of Upper Hardress, Canterbury, with whom he resided at Blanerne, in Berwickshire, until the late Dr. Broughton was appointed first Anglican Bishop of Australia, whereupon the deceased came to Sydney in the charge of the Bishop, and resided in this State for 60 or 70 years. The parishes of Ashfield, Bur-wood, Five Dock, and Enfield were formerly in-cluded in one incumbency, presided over by the de--ceased as a minister of the Church of England. He also held other incumbencies in the city and the suburbs up till the month of November last when, against the wishes of his parishioners he voluntarily resigned his rectorship, on the ground of ill health.   The King's School, Parramatta, was founded by Bishop Broughton, and the Rev. Dr. Forest was ap-pointed first headmaster, under whom the deceased received his education at the King's School.
