THE MATCH AGAINST THE SYDNEY

UNION.

S. GREAT CROWD, AN EXCITING MATCH

AND A WIN FOR ENGLAND BY 6 TO 5.

The Agricultural Ground was attended yesterday by fully 25,000 people to witness the match between the Englishmen and the representatives of the Sydney Union The match Was splendidly and, so far as the play was concerned, evenly contested, victory resting with the visitors by 8 points to 5 As the result of a conference held yesterday morning, an alteration was made in the placing of the bull in kicking for gaol, to fit in with the Englishmen's method The English custom is that the ball immediately on touching the ground becomes "alive" and may be charged Hitherto it was first placed by the kicker, and then lifted and replaced by another, preparatory Petherick being taken just before starting his Excellency Earl Beauchamp arrived, and was received with cheers lti3a»veuther was delightfully calm, and the ground in fairly good order

Mr. A J Faulkner, of the Queensland Referees' Association, acted as referee The Englishmen won the toss and defended the eastern end Purdue kicked off and Nicholls returned, and the ball went into touch midn day Some exchaugokicking followed, and then M'Mahon twice brought forth cheers for punting into touch midway Exciting play ensued in the centre, where the ball eventually went into touch at the centre flag X he throw-in was taken by a local man, but holding on too long he failed to get a pass in, and Adamson getting possession ran and then passed to Bucher, who scored amidst great cheering Adamson took the kick, but failed to convert England, 3 to nil The Kick out was followed by Miss brilliant passing by the Sydney forwards, in which Kelly was the principal man, and amongst the others who took part therein were Carson and O'Donnell The scene was thus very quickly changed to the visitors' goal line but the local men lost the ball, and Full-back Thompson kicked to M'Mahon, who returned to Thompson, and the latter ran and then pointed well over M Mahon's head and a great and sensational race ensued for the ball Swannell gained a few yards on the Sydney full back, but the latter spurting coached the ball first and forced It was a most exciting incident, and M'Mahon was loudly cheered for his saving effort Sydney returned to the attack, and White almost got in He took a pass from Row and bolted for the line but was forced out into the corner Exciting work were read the throw-in, which wound up with a relief to the Englishmen Twice in their own half the visitors were penalised for faulty putting of the ball in the serum, out nothing of any moment resulted, and a beautiful bit of work was shown by Francomb, Stout, and another, in passing, and finally Tarmnu got over, and Adambon kicked a goal England, 8-0 Sydney continually came with Word, o'Donnell, to White, but though these passes w crew or pretty they are

The ball, instead of being forced was kicked out, and Webb marked in front of goal, but again Row's kick was unsuccessful, and this time the Englishmen forced At half time the scores were England 8, Sydney nil

SECOND HALF
