A meeting of the City Council presided over by the Mayor (Alderman Matthew Harris), was held at the Town Hall yesterday. There were also present Alderman Jeanneret, Lees, Beare, M. Chapman, Landers, Booth, Buckle, Sir William Manning, Fowler, Denn, John Harris, Jessep, Hart, Ives, Rainford, Taylor, Waine, Burdekin, Smail H.

Chapman, and Penny.

QUEEN VICTORIA MARKETS

On the motion of Alderman Jeanneret it was resolved to repay to Messrs Phippard Brothers, con- tractors, £10,000, being portion of the money re-tained by the council in respect of the contract for the erection of the Queen Victoria Market buildings.

On the motion of Alderman Taylor it was resolved, -"That, in accordance with the recommendation of the finance committee, the basement floor of the market buildings be laid in concrete and asphalt in the most approved manner, and the lavatories &c., staircase blocks and annexes at Druitt and Market

streets, be finished with cement flooring on concrete foundation by contract; and that tenders for the work be invited forthwith."

On the motion of Alderman M. Chapman it was resolved, - "That the model for the second group of statuary prepared by Mr W. P. Macintosh for the York street frontage of the market buildngs is approved."

On the motion of Aldermin John Harris it was

resolved,- "That the city architect be instructed to report on the cost of building strong-rooms and a cooling chamber in connection with the market buildings."
