THE LATE GURMAN CONSUL.

The funeral of the late Herr Carl Ludwig Sahl, German Consul, took place at the Waverley Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The procession left the deceased's late residence, Longwood, shortly after 3 p.m. On the coffin were placed the late Consul's sword, official hat and the decorations bestowed upon him by the German Emperor. The plate on the coffin was inscribed as fol-lows -'"Carl Ludwig Sahl, Imperial German Consul. Born January 8, 1840; died April 1, 1897" A very long trin of carriages, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes of the community, followed the remains to the cemetery. Both the Gorman warships, Falke and Bussard, and theAustrian warship Albatross sent detachment. The combined bands of tho Falke and Bussard were present and playcd a Lutheran hymn as the coffin was being carried into tho hearse. Among those who followed were-Herr Peldram (Con- sul-General for Germain), Colonel Bell (United States Consul), M Baird d' Aunet (French Consul-General), Herr Paul Russian Consul), M Maniachi (Greek Consul) Mr Macgregoro (Consul for Peru), Mr F B Free-hill (Consul for Spain) Mr Boesen (Consul for Denmark), Captain J. Mergell (AuátriunConsul) Mr J T Tillock (Argentine Consul) the commanders» of the foreign warship*) Captain Krieg, Winkler, and von Mauler; Drs Helms, Eichler and Lillie

Mr Jessep, M.L.A.; Messrs C.B. Fairfax, Joseph, H Mort, L Mort, Giles Jackson, and re- representatives from the German societies and most of the shipping firms in Sydney. The chief mourners were Mrs Sahl who was accompanied by Miss Binnie and Herr Otto Bauer (cousin of the de- cease.) The service at the grave was con- ducted in the German language by Pastor Schenck, Lutheran Minister. Ellis, the Misses Fost and others, the German Club, Mr M Rutlv, the German Con-cordia Club, Mr Meciszewaki, Mrs and Miss Binnie Mr and Mrs Machen, Mr Killani, the German Glee Club, The women's committee of the German Church, Captain Staben, (German barque Ocean), Ciptain Muller (German ship Lika), and the servants at Longwood

The majority of the wreaths were provided by Messrs. Searl and Sons and Miss Goodenough. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mrs. P. Kirby and Sons.

In consequence of the death of the German Consul, Herr Sahl, not only the German officers and many of the ships, but also the foreign consulates in Sydney had their flags at half must yesterday
