A. J. C. AUTUMN MlSETIXG-ST. LEGER DAY.

I'iifron ; His Kx.ielU-ticy Lord Augustus Loftus, G.G.D. ;

Judge : like. V. Dargin; grazier. Mr. Richard Rouse ; Ilnndiii'pp°r, 75-" F A. Scarr . Clerk of the Course : Mr. J. Ashworth : Secretary : Mr. A. S. Clibborn.

The first day's racing in connection with the Autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club took place at Rand-wick yesterday. At an early hour rain fell, and the spirits. of spoitKincn interest. have descended to, a low ebb in consequence. Towards noon, however, the clouds lifted a little, and Anticipations are entertained that though the sun might not slime no rain would fall. A slight shower fell during the no (prisons, and the vines blew rather coldly over the rooms!, buttonhole whole the weather was agreeable. In point of attraction last the racecourse divided honours with the principal results of holiday makers, and in the iii'tcriioonabout fifteen tlit.iiMind portions had assembled on it. It, therefore, presented a more than usually animated appearance. The grand stand was filled with spectutors, limelight varying were a large number of ladies. On the lawn even stationed the band of the Permanent

Artillery', was played selections of operatic music. in the / morning thr-gin.vi revue from dump to admit of general pro-

menade. but in the afternoon, when it became dry, ladies In considerable" numbers sauntered over it. The display of containers was marked by deep richness rolling (han by brilliancy of lines, as the season was too far advanced for light colours. A very large number of the costumes were extremely handsome. " Notwithstanding the rain which fell fU the previous day, the course was in fair chairman for lacing, addition arrangements made by the, committee were so complete that no 'bill! occurred in carrying out the programme. Six river's, \»-<-jp on Wip card, nm wilh two exceptions the i-ninpciilnrii in i'lichworoiminoniua. Mr. Rouse started them all in excellent town, and I the only mishaps that occurred were the falls of a horse and its rider the Hurdle Race which however had two serious results. President avon the ïlurolo'Jlii'n. YVcllm;;tuu the Autumn Stakes, Bpinningdolo lbs Chump:". the Smith-.-,. Progress the St. Leger Stakes, Rapid Bay tin- J 'tiiunu.ter Handicap, and again the Trial Stakes five of the six winners being those nominated by the sporting writer "Nemo.'' Immediately the races were concluded the spectators left the course, but found the arrangements for comv-y/jH' them home quite inadequate. The trains, which M'ciiitd t" he am an frequently as the limited rolling not he: should permit, waters rushed, and vastly overProviding. 'the "omnibuses and! cubit in attendance, were quickly in(itiop'ili"p(I, and a large proportion of the people had to walk to the i i ty. Briskly, the rushing and crowding of the tram- led to no injury to life or limb, but it had isticü ocr 21 o,, i : i i rising in some of the motor and springs of cars to Reels na c tent that a considerable time must elapse before they can be put in proper working order again.

Some of the naming, especially that for the Champagne Stakes and the Doncaster Handicap, was very close and stay citing, and the finish for the last-named race must have been highly Hitiibtuctt.ry to Mr. Scarr. Pangee, Peter Simple, Sprinter, YimI, Maritana, Councillor, Darby-thefaust, and Jupiter were scratched for the Hurdle Race. for which i'reimdpiit was so freely backed, that at the end it was difficult to get 2 to 1 about him. Pluto parted with Richard after a struggle at the first hurdle, and after a pretty race the favourite ron to the front when about half a-mile from home, and won easily by about three lengths. The Autumn Stakes was deduced to a match between Wellington and Braidwood, and the son of Panic, who led all the way, work very easily, without being once extended. A splendid start began proceedings in the Champagne Stakes and, after (Valentino had made a deal of running, Somerset put in his claim at the distance; but a little further on The Gem shot to the front and looked all over a winner; but Spinning-, dale, who had been in a bad position, dashed up in the outside when near the St. Leger stand, end finishing at a wonderful pace snatched the race out of- Che Oro in the last stride, and scoredia*'brilîinnt,v1otory by a head, the same distance separating The Gem anaJSomorsot, while "Wheatear, who tired in the last 100 yards, had his head on Somerset's girths. The absence of Grand Flaneur Honrived the St. Leger of disinterest, and Progress won as he chose from the two opposed-.to"him, and then rattled on to Cuttfi's, so as to complete gallop of two miles with a view to the Sydney Cup on Wednesday. A very numerous field faced the flag for the Doncaster Handicap, and Mr. Rouse had no end of trouble to get them away, but did not at last to a good start. Courtenay out out the work at a great pace, but lost a lot of ground by running out wide at the home turn), and Rapid Bay, dashing upon the inside,

just beat him on the Dust, while Black Swan, coming with,

a desperate rush, was only beaten by a head for second place Etna was backed at evens for the Trial Stakes, and taking up the command when about three furlongs from home was never afterwards interfered with, and won in a canter The following is an account of each race -

After topping the hill Rapid Bay went up second, and next to him could be seen P. G., Master Avenel, and Black Swan, at the head of a clustered ruck. Leaving his horses at every stride, Courtenay 1 had an advantage of four lengths at the Dead, but running out very wide at the home turn, he lost a deal of ground, andRamdBay. against Thornley headed him at the du
