VICTORIA.

MELBOURNE, TUESDAY. The

outgoing mail will take a formal invitation to a H.R.H. the Prince of Wales to open the Exhibition.

The balloon accident yesterday was caused by the inexperience of the aeronaut, in not allowing for the great expansion of gas consequent upon his rapid ascent. He had clutched the valve-rope to pull it, to allow the gas to escape, when he heard an explosion. He thought of jumping out, but found that the parachute came into play. No doubt the parachute

saved his life.

There was a large gathering: of Su_J_v._eihao2,

children to-day, in the Town Hall, the building being crowded. The Bishop of Melbourne preached <

sermon.

Great complaints are made at the Hospital at the non-attendance of the honorary staff, and it was shown that one doctor had not attended his patients for Vwa months. Yesterday he sent in his resignation.

To-day was observed as a holiday in the Government

offices.

The weather has cleared, and is now beautifully

fine.
