BIIUKEK: ' JOSIAH MULLENS.

The object of the abovo Company is to furnish in Sydnoy accommodation for ino poor of tho hnrd-vvoiking classes, who have no homes of their own, a shelter night by night, both healthful nnd decent, at a cost which will ra'ako the Institution self-supporting, and which may in the eourso of years pay a moderato dividond to tho shareholders. Tile revelations contained in the reports of tho Sowngo nnd Health Commission show tho noccssity of such a move-ment as this, if tho poor in our midst aro to bo preserv-od from a downward course by the compulsory degradation which tho only accommodation now within their reach entails. Tho low chargo of Gd. per night will bo sufficient to meet nil exponaos, and will bring tho institution within tho reach of all who will appreciate its advantages. A similar company was formed in Melbourne in 1872. and is in overy way n success. Their half-yearly repart of January, 1877, shows an unexpended balance o'f £o25. of which sum £503 has been set aside, ns the first instalment of a sinking fund to pay off tho mortgngo debt of £4000, tho only liability of the company. The revenuo derived from tho Lodging Houso during tho half-year embrnoeJ. in tho above report was £1012, and the numbor of lodgers accommodated during the same period was

37.4S5.

It is proposed to purehaso a suitablo site, and to erect thoioou a plain but sufficiently ornamental building, to accommodate nightly 200 ledjors, and to próvido tho necessary beds, bedding, baths, and hivntories, &c, with officot for (he superintendent and other attendants.

The Molbourno houso cost for lund, building, and furni-ture, £9200, and gives accommodation for"223 lodgers. Tho Company furnishes no meals, but piovideâ n largo reading-room with newspapers, aud various amusements, such ns draughts, chess, &c. ; and also, a common kitchen and fire, at which tho innintes can cook thoir own breakfasts if they wish.

The good this institution may do ia hardly te bo cal-culated, it is not a pauperising one, as thoso who pirtako of_ its advuntages will pay tho cuiront cost, and the oxistonco of such a houso must toudto improvo tho character of ever}- private house for tho samo class of inmates throughout the city. An appeal is therefore made for your support, both on philanthropic and pa'riotic grounds.

The proj'ect will ultimately bo a commercial success nlso, but this is not put prominently forward. The main point is whether you will help to stem" the tide of drunkenness, by giving fresh air, clean resting places, and plenty of water to those who are now compelled by the necessities of their position to frequent unvvholesomo places, in which they are stifled and blood-poisoned, and almost compelled to wash away tho consequences by tho uso of stimulants.

The capital proposed te bo raised bus been fixe! at £6000 only, with the object ot faking up on mortgngo such furlher sum as may be required at tho moderato interest at which money can generally bo bad here on first-elnss securities.

A proposal will be made at tho first mooting of tho share-holders te limit the division of piofits among the share-holders to live per cent., and to apply tho surplus ia extend-ing tho benefits of tho institution.

Should you consout te take pit in this work you aro requested to sign tho accompanying form, aud return it to tho Broker (Mr. J. Mullens), 31, Hunter-street, with your cheque for a deposit of 6s per share. If the Company is formed the balance of subscription will bo called by tho Board, to bo elected by the Shareholders, in such instal-ments nstlipjirogress of the undoi'laVing mny loiuiro. If tho Company be not foi mod I ho deposit will be returned, less the charges incurred in endeavouring to start tho enter-prise. These expenses will be very sundi, ns all the profes-sional services are giv en without eunrirc.

The great advantage of co-operation in Trade is now BO genially acknowledged, nnd univvisully appreciated, that it lins been coUbiiLnvd do-irablp to form a Company for the Iuipoit.ilian t'f Drapeiy und Gonural Merchandise, and c'.'iu'yiug on the business of vi itiohouseiiien on the pi iuciplo ot the Feue-btio>t Warehouse Company mid other largo

establishments in Loudon.

The gicat benefit to be derived by paities in trade coopeiatiuï in this movement must be uppnrent fiom the fact that the capital of the Company will enable them to pur-chase poods on tho best tonus, nnd tnko advantage of or-dern o=sion in the market ; nnd by retailors bec-ouiiug share-holders they would not only bo able to buy at tho cheapest rato, but be participators in tho wholes ile profit«, and so enable them to compete most favourably with any others in

the trade.

Country storekeepers would find it especially beneficial in becoming shareholders, as tho Compnny could act ns their agents if required, raid so give tho best assurance that all ordeis or indents entrusted to them would bo executed with the greatest caro and dispatch.

'This oilers a moat iavourublo opportunity for parties in houses of business to inve-t thoir savings, especially as a Ereference will be given to siMcholdors who may desire to

eeome assistants, and evory facility will be afforded them of commencing business on their own account.

To parties with surplus capital, this is a raro chanco for investment, ¡is investors mny reasonably look forward to a quick return and geed dividends.

.Tils following exttaet from the Sydney Morning Herald of February 5, 1874, will show the oxlraordinaty result obtained by a wholosalo co-operntivo store established in Manchostor towards tho end of 1803 :-" It commenced with a capital of £999 only ; mid in tho first half-year of its existence, sold goods lo the oxtont of £5902. lu the halfyear euding April, 18G5, the sum «f £42,625 was received for goods; nnd in the corresponding period of 1872, the amount hod risen to £407,000, being an increase of over 800 per cent, ovor 1865. This extraordinary result of nino yeais' trading seems almost incrediblo ; but when wo call to mind tho mngnitudo of some of tho Sydnoy warehouses which hayo sprung into oxistonco, and attained such largo proportions in a few years, it is not a matter of so much surprise."

The Company will bo considered formed when a sufficient nuuiber of shares are applied for to enable the Company to commence operations, which will bo determined by a general meeting of Shareholders, to be called for that purpose, and

for tho election of Directors.

If thought desirablo to build promises, a suitable site for extensive operations can now- be obtained in one of the best and most central positions in > Sydney. In such case, temporary premises could be taken in the meantime.

As there are NO PROMOTERS or FREE SHARES, the whole of tbo capital, as shares are sold, will be available for the company, loss cxponses in terming tho same. The brokers, having the fullest confidence in the success of the undei taking, nre content to take thoir brokerage of 5 per cent, in fully paid-up shares of the company.

PUBLIC NOTICES.

mo THE EDITOR OF TUE HERALD.

Sin,-Tho Prophet Isaiah said,-Woo unto them that arc wiso in their own eyes, and prudont in their own sight." Knowing, Mr. Editor, that your columns are always open for all fair criticisms on public men, I wish to mako a lew remarks that if allowed to pass unchallenged, would bo likely to prow into a habit in our municipality which ia

timo would bo difficult to eradicate.

In tho tint instance I wish to state, that our worthy Mayor, according to his own admission, took on himsoff tho responsibility to instruct tho Council Clerk to alter a notico of motion, that was sent or delivered, duly signed, by tho Alderman to the Council Clerk, in such a manner ns to suit himself, and when his authority to do this was ques-tioned, his answor wus, you have your remedy. Certainly wo havo our remoly, which tho people of Ryde hnvo learnt to their cost, hy being compellod to go to the Supremo Couit for redress, which I am thankful to say thoy

obtained.

Now, Mr. Editor, if our municipnl affairs aro to bo tam-

pered with in this manner, there is an end at once to «li e-onlidenco in our chiefs. I for ouo maintain that tho Mayor has no right to investigate notices of motion sont in by any alderman, hut to direct the Council Clerk to tamper with or alter them is, in my opinion, violating tho spirit of tho Aot. and when called to account for so doing, coolly say you havo your remody. Tho Municipality of Ryde, up to tho present time, has bceu worked to the general aitisfsction of thoratopaycrs, bul I fear there is rt'clsud in the horizon which tho ratepayers will havo to dispel, before it gathers into a storm, that to thom will prove almost unmanageable.

I hnvo a deal moro to say but for the present will with-hold any furthor romaiks.

I remain, your obedient sorvnnt.

J. TUCKER.

Ryde, March 6,1378._ TO* THE~INHABITANTS OF MACDONALD

TOWN.

I seo a letter signed " Churlos B. Henderson," respecting the platform in George-slreet, uni other things, a great

deal of which is not Irue.

I distinctly state, that I was tho first person who took any trouble to get tho platform, nnd never lost sight of it until it was granted by tho Government. The first stop I took was to get up n petition, Waieh Mr. Honderson wroto for mo, but it was by Mr. Kelly's assistance I obtained 300 signatures ; nil that Mr. Henderson did was to go with me to Newtown for two hours, where we obtainc-d 15 signatures. I believe it was his intention to work with us -in tho first place. I then took the petition to the Council and proposed lhat a doputation be formed to wait on the Minister for Works, and ns Mr. Henel« son was Mayor at tho time, he put it to tho Council, and we waited upon Mr. Lickey, who went out of office before it was granted. I took thi sumo steps again'when Mr. Hoskimj took office, but iu io no mysterious way this letter missed fire ; another letter was written, and Mr. Hoskins met tho deputation, and was in favour of tho platform being erected midway between R-dforu und Newtown. Attain there was a ch inpo in the Ministry, nuil I took the step in tho Council, noa wo formed ii third doputation, and waited on Mr. Combes, who granted tho platform, "uni I wish him every sneoss." And now, in regard lo Mos-rs. Hill and Watkins, instead of writing to tho Minister for Works, they wrote to the Ma vor ; and Mr. Henderson told mo himself that tho'-fools ought to have written to the Minister, and not to bim, and that ho had to roctiiy it. Now, where aro all the great things that Mr. Henderson has done? As for whut ho i-ays about Mr. M'Elhuuo, I heald a gentleman tell Mr. Braid: but whether it is tho

truth or not I cannot sly.
