The Yellow God

(H. Rider Haggard?.

In this story Mr. Haggard returns to his earlier and better style—the style which made "She," "King Solomon's Mines," and "Allan Quartermain" popular with readers of romance. There is much in this book to remind one of all three, and less of the soul searching and transcendental. The occult occurs a little, but only In sufficient quantity. There is the familiar sensual princess-priestess, and the gallant, and by her coveted, adventurous Englishman. And there is a faithful native henchman, and a lovely and lovable heroine. And these with villains of varying degree, are mixed up with adventures of a most blood-curdling kind, led to by mysterious and only partly decipherable M.S. And there is gold galore as part of the hero's reward. Exploration having spoiled South Africa for him, the author has changed the venue to a spot far inland from the West Coast of the Dark Continent. One of the best of this class of romance that has appeared for a long time. Cassell and Co., the publishers, from whom we have a copy, are to be complimented on the way the book is turned out. A copy also reached us from Angus and Robertson.
