Red Eve (H. Rider Haggard).

A romance of the days of Edward III., who, with the Black Prince, appears on the scene several times. "Red Eve" is a Suffolk girl, whose title is only due to her fancy for wearing a red cloak or shawl. She is betrothed to a distant cousin belonging to a branch of the family at feud with her own, and is sought in marriage by a French-Italian nobleman, who is a traitor and a villain, but a friend of her father. And all these elements fight matters out in true Haggard fashion, with plenty of blood and death. The battle of Cressy comes into the story, and is well sketched. And near the end the Black Death spreads over Europe, and a supernatural incarnation of Death takes

a hand in the plot. Published by
