Queen Sheba's King (Rider Haggard).

To say this very greatly resembles other

works by the same author is not to discredit it

in any way, since in their line one could hardly find a better model. In this there is a little of

"She," a little of "King Solomon's Mines," and a little of "Cleopatra," and others. And having been driven out of South Africa by the explorer and the pioneer, the author comes further north, and chooses a spot in the heart of the Dark Con- tinent, near a river which the hero "believes" runs into the Nile. Here priests plot and lovely

women love and are loved, and British adven-

turers come and perform deeds of derring-do in the "old sweet way." There is mystery and ad- venture in plenty, blood and killing, gold and

jewels, savage nobility and treachery, and all

the old furniture used in a new way. And con-

sequently a thoroughly enjoyable romance.
