OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN EDWARD DUMARESQ. THE OLDEST MAN IN TASMANIA.

News has been received of the death of Captain Edward Dumaresq, of Mount Ireh, Longford, at the extraor-dinary ago of 104. The deceased was the oldest man in Tasmania. He was the youngest son of the late Colonel John Dumaresq, whose sons, on account of the father's distinguished military services in America, received from the British Government an education at Sandhurst, and commissions in the Im-perial army. The oldest son, Colonel Henry Dumaresq, served throughout the Peninsular war, and was made a colonel by the Duke of Wellington on the field of Waterloo. The second son, Captain William Dumaresq, also fought through the Peninsular war. The youngest son, Captain Edward Dumar-esq, whose prolonged life has now ter-minated, joined the Indian army, and received a staff appointment. In 1828 he was appointed Surveyor-General of Tasmania by Governor Arthur, and sub-sequently held the positions of Internal Revenues Officer, Commissioner of Crown Lands and Court of Requests. Subsequently he was appointed Police Magistrate at New Norfolk. In the early days of Longford the deceased took a great interest in the work of road-making, and to him is due, in a great measure, the present good roads in that part of the State. He purchas-ed the Mount Ireh estate in 1835, and has resided there ever since. It is situated five miles from Longford rail-way station, and is one of the most beautiful spots in the district. The interesting old homestead occupies an eminence commanding a lovely view of the surrounding country. In 1827 Captain Dumaresq married Miss F. B. Legge, daughter of the late Mr. Michael Legge, barrister-at-law, Dublin, Ireland, but who predeceased him.
