MELBOURNE AS THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S HEADQUARTERS.

EFFECTS UPON SYDNEY TRADE OPINIONS OF REPRESENTATIVE COMMERCIAL MEN.

The 'Sunday Times' haa'already pointed out some of the probable effects upon the commercial interests of Sydney resulting from the so-called concession to New South Wales under which, in return for the Capi-tal being ultimately fixed in some part of New South Wales, Melbourne is to be the headquarters of the Federal Government,

Parliament, and Governor-General for an indefinite period. During the week we have had an oppor-tunity of ascertaining the opinions of some of the heads of firms whose business is likely to be affected by this one-sided con-cession, and they generally concur in the view that it is a disadvantageous one for Sydney interests. It is realised that every great fashionable function means large expenditure among the tradespeople of.a city and the employ-ment of a good deal of labor. Sydney is to have no participation in this in respect of the Governor-General's residence in Australia. Melbourne is to enjoy a mono-poly.
