Clive James is lost

for words, for once

LONDON: International media per sonality Clive James was lost for words after being made a Member of the Order of Australia General Division (AM) in the 1992 Queen's Birthday honours list.

The 52-year-old expatriate Australian received the honour for services to the media, particularly as a television

broadcaster.

"I'm just so pleased that, for once, words fail me," James told AAP.

Born in Kogarah, Sydney, he arrived in London in 1962 with £10 ($A24) in his pocket and after 15 years had made a big enough name through books and journalism to attract a £355,000 ($A855,000) a year job offer from the

BBC.

His Saturday Night Cliva show on the BBC is regularly seen by three mil lion viewers.

'Embarrassed'

In Sydney, Australian radio journal ist Monica At lard was embarrassed and shy about being awarded the Medal in the General Division (OAM).

Her boss, John Highfield, interna tional editor for the Australian Broad casting Corporation, said Attard deserved the award "for service to the community" as the Moscow corre spondent

But he said at heart Ms Attard was a "very shy person" and "quite embar rassed by all the attention she's getting".

Attard, in her early 30s, was appoint ed to the position in October 1990 after a career as a journalist in television and radio. She became most well known during the coup in the former Soviet Union last August

"She managed to distil a fast-moving and complex set of circumstances and bring us a graphic picture successfully predicting the outcome of the events," he said.

Service to art

Artist Ken Done, internationally rec ognised for his colourful Australiana de signs, said he was "absolutely thrilled" to be made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to art and design and to the tourist industry.

"Out of all the things that have hap pened [to me] there can be no greater honour than some reward or recogni tion from your own country," he said.

Done, who turns 52 this month, has Done Art and Designs shops in Tokyo, Guam, Singapore and Hawaii and his Sydney-based company employs 120 people.

'Cut ties'

Internationally renowned Australian composer Roger Woodward, awarded his second Queens honour, believes Australia should cut its tics to the mon archy.

"I think if we had the confidence to work towards a republic that would be very exciting, so that we could trust ourselves to run our own affairs," Woodward said.

The pianist, conductor and compos er, who turns 50 this year, has been made a Companion in the Order of Australia General Division (AC), for service to music, particularly as a pia nist, and to the promotion of Australian composition.
