LONDON, Sunday. The

air correspondent of the ' "Sunday Express" understands that the Air Ministry has selected Mrs. | Miles, aged 31 years, wife of Mr. j

Frederick Miles, designer of the Satyr, Hawk, and other light planes, as one of the five commissioners of the new Civil Air Guard.

Members of the guard, who will comprise about 1,000,000 men and women members, aged between 18 and 50 years, will learn to fly, and will be able to maintain their licences for a little more than 15 a week.

Plane Designer

Mrs. Miles, who is the eldest daughter of the late Sir Johnston Forbes - Robertson, the Shakespearian actor, and Miss Gertrude Elliott, is herself a pilot and

a successful aeroplane designer. She is

designed the Miles Sparrowhawk racing monoplane.

She is tall and dark, blue-eyed, and, handsome;

Twenty-six thousand scrum,have applied to join the guard since plans for its formation were announced a week ago. It is hoped that training will be begun on September 1 instead of October 1.

All the used light planes available

have been bought by the Air Ministry, and manufacturers are building

many new machines. p
