Obituary

MR. A. E. BOWMAN

Leading Grazier

Mr Albert Edward Bowman, aged 73 years, one of the best known stock and property owners in the State died at a private hospital in Melbourne on Sunday after a long illness. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Bowman of Tasmania. When a young man he took charge of Poltalloch Station close to Lake Alexandrina (S. A.). Later he acquired the famous Bethanga Park Station, near Wodonga.

With the building of the Hume weir the Government resumed the larger and better part of Bethanga Park and offered Mr. Bowman a price that he did not regard as being fair. He appealed successfully and was paid many thousands of pounds compensation. For many years he bred and fattened thousands of cattle which usually topped the Melbourne market. He also bred hundreds of horses and ponies. Before the resumption of his land he had as many as 700 horses running on the property at Bethanga Park.

The late Mr. Bowman raced horses ex- tensively in the north east of Victoria and southern Riverina. Generally he raced horses he bred himself although he was also a frequent buyer at the yearling sales in Melbourne and Sydney. He brought the Mostyn horse Barr from Ade-laide where he had previously sired Dyna-mite, the winner of a Melbourne Cup.

Mr. Bowman also owned a splendid ad- joining property which he bought from Mr. George Northey, and also Elm Park near Jindera (N.S.W.), which he recently sold. He also owned Fairy Knowe, an ex-tensive property situated in the Mitta Valley. He was a most generous man and liberally assisted public and private charities. His wife was Miss McFarlane, of Adelaide, whose brothers, Messrs. Allan (Adelaide), Gordon (Adelaide), John (Young, N.S.W.) and Donald (Young, N.S.W.) are all well known in stock and sporting circles. There were no children.

The funeral will take place at Wodonga to-day, leaving the Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Arrangements are being car-ried out by A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.
