Obituary

MR. DAVID McHAFFIE

Phillip Island has lost another link with its early days by the death of Mr David James Wemyss McHaffie at the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth, on March 10. He was the eldest son of the late John David McHaffie, who, with his brother, William, in 1842, occupied Phillip Island under licence from the Admiralty, and in 1847 a reclassified northern strip under lease as certain "Waste lands of the Crown in the district of Westernport, In the Colony of New South Wales. " The brothers were sons of Lieut.--General James McMaffie, of the 21st Royal Scots Fusilieir. Deceased, who was 75, was formerly lieutenant in charge of the Warragul detachment of Light Horse, and, later, volunteered for service abroad but during the last war was retained for duty under Colonel Newing at the Castlemaine training camp. He is survived by a widow, a daughter, and three sons, one of whom, Noel, served three years on active service

in Palestine in the last war.
