THE REV. W. I. CARR-SMITH.

Sydney loses a good parson to-morrow, when the Rev. W. I. CarrSmith leaves for England on the Niko Maru. Mr. Carr-Smith and his sister are going home via Japan and the United States, and they will take with them the good wishes of a large circle. For the last ten years the Rector has worked at St. James, in King-st., and has made a beautiful church out of the dilapidated, dreary old structure. He has the largest congregation possible, and he has done an immense amount

of good. If it was certain that he was not re-turning, I would tell a lot of things about him, but he might come back, and then, it wouldn't be easy for him — or the writer. He is nominally go- ing home on a year's leave of absence, but his people are very anxious to have him return. And he has learned to love his congregation, and our sunny skies, and it won't be easy for him to live in England now. There is a wide freedom in Australia, as well as a glorious climate, and I expect the Rector back. He objects to a formal send-off, and he's right, but he takes with him the loving good wishes of us all.
