TROPHIES FOR FOOTBALLERS

Essendon Football Club committee last night completed the allocation of trophies. Buttsworth and Lyons had previously been awarded trophies

for best and fairest and runner-up respectively. Others were: Most consistent, Ruddell; Roy Laing Cup, Hird; most Improved, C. Lambert; best first year, Pearson; Glen Ord tropliy, Hutchison; best club man, Gardiner; best utility, Lane; most unselfish, Bushby; most, serviceable, Powell; special trophies, Buttsworth, Reynolds, and Brittingham.

As South Australia are sending a team to Perth next year the WA League notified the club that they could not receive an Essendon team. Arrangements will now be-made for a trip to another state.

SMALLHORN RETURNS

"Chicken" Smallhorn, Brownlow Medal winner and a champion Fitz-roy wing man, is expected to arrive in Melbourne today from .a POW camp. In a letter received yesterday by his wife from the West, Smallhorn said that he was fit, but he is de-scribed as "walking sick," and will go to the military hospital. He will see his son-aged three years for the first time. There is still no news of Arthur Gay, vice-president, who was captured at the same time but who was sent to a camp in Borneo.

MANY SEEK ST KILDA JOBS

St Kilda committee last night re-ceived eight applications for the position of secretary, and nine for playing or non-playing coach. They will be discussed at a later meeting. The resignation of Mr Keith Youlden as secretary was accepted, and he was again appointed to the com-mittee. Sam Snell announced his retirement as a player. He has had a fine career with the team.

LEAGUE SECONDS EXPAND

Adopting a recommendation from a special committee, the League sec-onds will now proceed with the for-mation of a third eighteen compe-tition, to be known as the Seconds B Grade. It is hoped to have it in operation next season. The resigna-tion of Mr W. J. McDonnell, previ-ously announced, was accepted. Mr Jack Merrick, the new secretary, has now begun his work.
