MELBOURNE HAS TWO RECRUITS

Giles and Ball in

Two players from the orange countryGiles, from Mildura, and Ball, from Mer-bein were the only new men chosen in the Melbourne team last night.

Giles, who has "starred" in every practice game, is the ideal type of wing half forward, being sturdy and active. He uses either (foot, turns neatly, and Is clever.

The other new man, Ball will open in the first ruck with Fischer. He is tall and "rangy," is a good mark and kick, is faster than the ordinary ruck man, and knows the game.

Continuing Its plan of other years, Melbourne will spell the relief ruck man at

centre half-forward. Murnane, who will open at centre half-forward, will partner ' Gordon Jones and Reiffel (rover) in the second ruck.

Percy Beames, Baxter, and O'Keefe are not available. Beames will be fit to play in the second match. He trained lightly yesterday, but his bruised thigh muscle was still a, little troublesome. Baxter has an injured tendon and O'Keefe a bruised

muscle.

In the absence of Mr. J. C. Blair, Mr. Hector Donahoo was the chairman at the players' dinner last night. Among the speakers were Messrs. V. Ransford, C. W. Simmonds, J. O. Smith, W. Flintoft, "Pop" Vine, and the coach ("Checker" Hughes).

A presentation was made to Foster, who has been compelled to retire because of injuries. Kinnear, Glass, Lewis, Foster, and Meehl (who has not yet applied for a clearance) were thanked for their services.
