New band shares industry honours

SYDNEY: Crowded House, INXS and new band 1927 took home the lion's share of awards last night at the third annual Australian Record Industry Awards.

The biggest night on Australia's music-industry calendar saw more than 1000 attend the black-tie ceremony at Sydney's Darling Harbour Convention

Centre.

The awards ceremony has become known more for the lack of attendance by award winners than anything else.

Crowded House, which was playing a gig in New York last night, took out the Best Contemporary Record award and the Best Album award for Temple of Low Men and Best Song of the year for

Better Be Home Soon.

With INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence in Hong Kong, Tim Farriss accepted his group's award for Best Australian Group and the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award, which enters them into the ARIA's Hall of Fame.

The newcomers, 1927, took home awards for both the Best Debut Single, That's When I Think of You, and Debut Album, ... ish.

Kylie Minogue lost out to Kate Cerebrano on the Best Female Artist stakes but managed the

Kylie Minogue

Highest Selling Single award for I Should Be So Lucky.

The diminutive Kylie, hounded by the media and dressed in a black braided jacket and tassels, was one of the few stars to attend the glittering ceremony that saw so many winners otherwise engaged.

John Farnham was too busy in Moscow doing a promotional tour for Greenpeace to collect his Highest Selling Album award for Age of Reason. However, he was beaten by veteran rocker Jimmy Barnes in the Best Male Artist category. Barnes, formerly with Cold Chisel, also was too busy to accept his award.
