AUSTRALASIAN GUANO COMPANY.»

GUANO-£7 5s. per ton, in bags delivered at the

Port.

£7 10s. per ton delivered in Adelaide.

The undersigned beg to inform the Farmers and Gar-deners of South Australia, that they have appointed Mr. ABRAHAM SCOTT, of ADELAIDE, as then- Agent, I and that it will facilitate their arrangements and secure

| delivery at the desired period, if orders for Guano are

sent in without delay.

The Guano which they offer is taken from the deposit I recently discovered on Flat Mand (from its approaches,

commonly called Mud Island), Port Phillip Bay, and the analysis of the same, carefully made by Dr. "Maca! dam, Government Analytical Chemist, proves that it

ranks very high as a permanent fertilizing Phosphatic Guano, containing, besides other valuable component parts, ten per cent, of phosphates of lime and magnesia (bone earth) more than the best specimens of Peruvian.

The celebrated Agricultural Chemist, Baron Liebig, has demonstrated that Phosphatic Guanos as fertilizers, ! deserve a preference to the stimulating and exhausting properties of those Guanos which are surcharged with ammoniacal matter, and has given a lucid scientific explanation of tho experience which practical farmers I have often made.

" Guano acts as a source of ammonia, but its ellie value depends undoubtedly on the phosphates it con-tains." ("Liebig's Elements of Chemistry," 8vo. ed., page 313.)

"But at the same time it is of great importance for agriculture to know with certainty that the supply o ' ammonia is unnecessary' for most of our cultivated plants, and that it may be even ' superfluous' if only the soil contain a sufficient supply of mineral food of plan s, 1 when Ihe ammonia required for their development will

be furnished by the atmosphere." - Liebig's Chemistry in its application to Agriculture, &c, fourth edition, pnge 212.

The Guauo of Flat Islind having thus, upon scientific authority, which is universally recognised as the highest existing, been shown to be of greater value than three times as expensive Guanos, will prove to be peculiarly well suited to the soils and climate of this country ;

and, although this is the first season in which it comes j iu tho market, trials which have been made by farmers and gardeners of well-known standing, respectability,

and experience in the colony, turn out extremely satis-1 factory, and their testimonials establish the fact that this Guano proves equal, and in some instances superior to Peruvian. At the vory moderate price at which it is offered, it is well deserving extensive adoption hy every

intelligent, economical, and enterprising farmer, who | must thereby realise tho most advantageous results.

ASKUNAS & CO.,

5S, William-street, Melbourne. [From the Argus Agricultural Report, May li.]

"As far as it has been yet tried, the colonial Guano,

from tho island within our own Bay, is giving graat |

satisfaction, both to Gardeners and Farmers. Amongst others, it has been purchased by Messrs. J. C. Cochrane and William Dewar, and applied to fields of oats, with the view of testing its value. The first-named gentle-

man used 2 cwt. to the acre, and sowed it alongside of I Peruvian Guano, which was applied in the proportion of

lj cwt. to the acre, in order to test their relative merits [ under similar circumstances, although, to give the colo- , nial Guano fair play, it should have been applied in the I proportion of three to one of the Peruvian, for such is the difference in price, whatever may be the relative value. However, as far as the experiment has yet gone,

Mr. Cochrane testifies that the portion of the field I manured with the colonial is fully equal to tho part

dressed with the Peruvian Guano. Mr. Dewar does not | state the exact quantity applied to each acre by him, but is perfectly satisfied with the effects, which he de-

clares to be greater andmore apparent, even at this early I sfcige of the crop, than any he ever witnessed from the Peruvian Guano, which ho formerly used. As far as his field of oats can bo seen, the difference between the

manured and unmanured portions is quite apparent in j the greater luxuriance and moro vivid green of the former. From the representations of these two gentle-men, whose opinions on such a subject are not likely to bo given rashly, many moro farmers have become pur-chasers, and this season, for the first time, a manure so long lying useless at our very doors will bo rather exten-

sively tried, and we have little doubt will he found of I almost equal value to both the gardener and farmer with ! the guano brought from such, a distanco, and sold at so much higher a price." dx*

AUSTRALASIAN GUANO COMPANY.- )

The undersigned having been APPOINTED j AGENT for the above Company, is prepared to SELL their FLAT ISLAND GUANO, delivered at Adelaide, at £7 10s. per ton ; at Port Adelaide, £7 5s.
