PIONEERING WOMAN'S DEATH.

The death of an old resident of the district in the person of Mrs. Jane Jenkins, the wife of Mr. William Gordon Jenkins occurred at Hawkes-dale on Wednesday last. The de-ceased arrived from Ireland in the

early sixties, and resided in the neighbourhood of Myamyn up till a few year's ago, when she and her hus-band went to live at Hawkesdale near her daughter, Mrs. J. Toogood, jun. She had been married twice, her first husband being Mr. W. Wal she, by whom she had four children, two boys and two girls. She estab-lished the Foresters' hotel at Mya-myn, in connection with which, in the early days, when carriers made Myamyn a camping spot, she car-ried on a general store. Shortly after her second marriage she moved to Portland, where she conducted the Victoria hotel, until it was closed by a local option poll. She saw the rise and progress of the district, and being a woman with a marvellously retentive memory; could relate many interesting incidents of the early days. For the past twelve months she had been in indifferent health and at the age of 80 years she pass-ed away as stated. The remains were interred at Hawkesdale on Fri-day.
