THE LATE MR. JOHN DUCKMANTON.

The death of Mr. John Duckman

ton, which took place last week, re moves from Dunkeld a very old and

highly respected pioneer. The deceas-ed, who was 75 years of age, was born at Warsop, Nottinghamshire,

England, in 1833, and arrived in Aus-tralia by the ship Yorkshire in I860, and shortly afterwards settled at Dunkeld. where (writes our correspon-dent) he resided till the time of his death. He followed the trade of car-penter and wheelwright, and built the first State school at Dunkeld, as well as other buildings in the dis-trict. He was an ardent supporter of the St. Mary's Church of England, and was a member of the committee when Bishop Thornton laid the foun-dation stone. He always took a keen interest in everything connected with the church, and the last work he did was making seats for it. Mr. Duck-manton took an active part in many public functions, and held the office of treasurer to the Loyal Duke of Edinburgh M.U.l.O.O.F. Lodge for 46 years. He leaves a widow and six daughters and six sons, the youngest, being now a soldier on his way to the front. There are also thirty three grandchildren. His remains were interred in the local cemetery, on Friday, the funeral being largely attended. The Rev. R. Giles conduc-ted the service at the graveside, and made feeling references to the sterling character of the deceased.
