DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.

A very old resident of this dis-trict, in the person of Mr. Samuel Keen, passed away early yesterday morning at his residence in Station-street. The deceased gentleman, who was highly respected, had resided in Hamilton for the past 61 years. He was born at Tamworth, in the coun-ty of Stafford, England, in the year 1846, and came to this country in the sailing ship Helen with his par-ents at the early age of six years, arriving at Portland. In the follow-ing year they came to Hamilton with a bullock wagon for a conveyance, as trains were prac-tically unknown. Mr. Keen was al-ways at his best when telling of his early experiences, and many were the friends gained by his kindly and genial disposition. He leave a wi-dow and a large family, for whom the deepest sympathy is expressed.
