The "Wild Scotchman." The "Wild Scotchman" (Mr. J. Mac-pherson) ,a noted bushranger, went to school in Ipswich in his early days. Between the years 1866 and 1867 he created a reign of terror in Queens-land. Some of his exploits took place near Ipswich and in the Upper Bur-nett. He was reputed to have done some very humorous things. In 1866 the mail from Ipswich to Nanango was twice robbed by the then notorious bushranger. On one occasion he was on foot, and he took all the letters and the postman's horse, saddle, and bridle. On another occasion he wrote to the Governor (Sir George Bowen), enclosing cheques and orders stolen by him to the amount of £1700, of which the "Wild Scotchman" stated be could make no use. This outlaw was finally captured by a private individual.
