NEW FEATURES IN CHRISTIAN

SCIENCE CHURCH

£16,000 Building at Camberwell

Erected at a cost of more than £16,000 the new Second Church of Christ, Scient-ist, building at Camberwell, will be opened early in December.

The building, which is in Cookson street, opposite the Camberwell railway station, has many interesting now features in church architecture. It is divided into three units. The Sunday school is on the ground floor, the church on the first floor, and an administrative block and board-rooms at the rear.

The church will seat 450 persons. It will be well lighted from louvre windows in the roof and from large windows on the side. These will be double glazed to en-sure silence. The walls will have a semi matt painted finish in old ivory, the up-holstery will be in peacock green, and silver grey will be introduced into the woodwork. Mechanical ventilation and a gas-operated heating system are being installed throughout the building. Off the entrance foyer there will be a cloakroom, specially ventilated to dry cloaks in wet weather.

In design the building does not follow any particular style of architecture. Mass-ing proportion and scale are relied on for effect. The walls are in cream bricks and the three tall windows and doors fin-ished with wrought iron grilles which light the ground floor and mid floor foyer have been made the centre feature of the design. A lift will be installed between the two foyers.

The architects for the work are Messrs Bates, Smart and McCutcheon of 419 Collins street.
