Benefit concerts after rock band's lead singer dies

SYDNEY: Eighties rock star Steve Gilpin, former lead singer of the chart-topping band Mi-Sex, died in the Gold Coast Hospital yesterday.

Gilpin had been in a coma since a car accident on November 25 near his home

in Mullumbimby, in northern NSW.

Benefit concerts for his wife Maggie and children Sarah and Nicky will be held in Sydney on February 15 and in Melbourne on February 21, featuring the surviving members of Mi-Sex, Sony Mu-

sic said in a statement.

Others confirmed to appear included members of the Angels, Mental As Any-thing and Matt Finish, "Bones" Hillman from Midnight Oil, Ross Wilson formerly of Daddy Cool and his drummer Craig Waugh.

Steve Gilpin first achieved fame in New Zealand in the 1970s when he won the televised New Faces competition.

He soon followed the path of many other New Zealand musicians to Sydney.

Mi-Sex hits that followed included Computer Games, You Just Don't Care, and I'm Only Laughing.
