The First Teachcr (1965), 12.30pm, SBS: This Soviet film, directed by Andrei Mikhaikov-Konchalovsky, is set in 1923 and centres on a young teacher who arrives in a poor Kirghiz village, meeting with/hostility from the locals as he attempts to change their ways. Natalia Arinbasarova won Best Actress at Venice in 1966 for her role. O
Chocolat (1988), 9.30pm, SBS: Director Claire Denis recalls the last years of French colonialism in West Africa through the memories of the daughter of a district officer in 1950s' Cameroon; It is .an "intriguing, dignified" film, says Bloomsbury's Foreign Film Guide, in which there is a sense that "ultimate harmony is doomed by misperception and 'progress'.". ©.
Better Off Dead (1985), 12.30am (Win): Rudderless comedy drama starring John Cusack and David Ogden Stiers about a teenager who despairs when his girlfriend ditches him — that is, until the new girl comes along. ©
Hey! Hey! USA (1938), 2aro, ABC:
For some reason, the ABC is show-, ing two films this week from the .'30s about heroic education experts, and both involving a Will Hay. Will acts in this one in which the expert sails to America, falls in love with gangsters, and saves a boy from being kidnapped by them. © The Servant (1963), 2.20am (Win): This Harold Pinter screenplay has a star cast including Dirk Bogarde, James Fox, Sarah Miles and Wendy Craig. A rich, ineffectual young man is gradually debased and overruled by his sinister manservant and his sexy "sister". ©

Rockabye (1986), 12 noon, (Prime): A young mother's baby is kidnapped in midtown New York and an ambitious woman journalist helps her search. ©
My Friend Ivan Lapshin (1986), 12.10am (SBS): Ivan Lapshin, a police chief in a provincial Russian town in the cold winter of 1935 is intent on tracking down a notorious gang of criminals, and in particular, its ruthless leader. Directed by Alexei Gherman, it offers outstanding performances and detail of Soviet life in the lead-up to the Stalin purges. ©
Where. There's a Will (1936), 2am (ABC): Well, yes, there is a Will in this one, too — Will Hay, in fact, who wrote it. In this one, a seedy education expert sponges on his rich relations but redeems himself by rounding up gangsters at a Christmas party.

An American doctor and his wife witness the murder of a French secret service agent who tells them before dying of an assassination that is to take place soon.
