William Hector Arnold of Dennis street Northcote, was convicted at the Northcote Court on Friday on six charges of having between June and November of last year wilfully made false statements to deceive an officer engaged in the distribution of susten-ance He He found guilty on all six charges, and fined £10 on each charge
Thomas Corrigan registrar of public assistance at Northcote said that during the relevant times Arnold received sustenance at the rate of -7/0 a week, plus an allowance of 8/ a week for rent The sustenance was for himself, wife, and three children lies permissible income was 30/ a week In monthly statements Arnold had shown his income to be

Otto Marinus Hansen chief superintendent of the Commonwealth General Assurance Corporation Limited, said that Arnold was employed by the company under an agreement dated March 10, 1934 His employment terminated about the end of the year He rccelled an allowance of 30/ a week and commission

received during that time was for work performed in return for sustenance He had retained the appointment with the assurance company so that he might have an opportunity of obtaining a staff appointment as a result of the new business which he introduced
Arnold stated in evidence that he was a sustenance employee under his agreement with the company he was entitled to appoint as many sub-agent as he deemed advisable to write assurance on his behalf He had received the moneys and paid them to third parties He had been on sustenance for two
years
