MR. LLOYD POWELL

Piano Lecture-recital

Mr Lloyd Powell, a well-known London pianist, who is in Australia as examiner for the Royal Schools of Music, last night gave an informal lecture-recital to mem-bers of the Victorian Music Teachers Association in the Kelvin Hall. He was Introduced by the president (Mr Harold Elvins), who thanked him for his gene-rosity in giving his time and talent to help their funds

Mr Powell interrupted his recital with brief explanatory talks on the composi-tions he played. One of the most interest-ing items was Schumann's "Carnival,' which is made up of a number of move-ments, each of which is dedicated to one of his friends or some well-known musi-cal figure of his day such as Chopin and Paganini. The different personalities of his friends as seen by Schumann aro re-vealed in the movement which he has in-scribed to them. The piece represents a carnival in the village in which he lived, and is based on the letters which make up the name of the village. His programme also included examples of the work of Handel, Chopin, Bach, and Ireland.
