FATAL FALL FROM A RACEHORSE.

Dr. Youl held an inquest at the Melbourne Hospital on Tuesday, on the body of a jockey named John Dodd, aged 19 years, who died in the institution on the 14th inst. The

deceased was in the employ of. Mr Robert Howie, horse trainer, residing at Ballarat, and was riding Suwarrow in the Mel-bourne Cup on the 1st inst. In the early part of the race Suwarrow got jammed into the fence, and stumbled, when the deceased's leg waa twisted between the rail and the post, and fractured. The de- ceased was then thrown off, and the other horses in the race galloped over him. Dr Stewart, one of the resident medical officers, stated that when the deceased was admitted be was suffering severely from shock to the system, and a compound fracture of the left leg. The injuries extended from the knee down He continued to progress favourably till the morning of the 14th, when profuse bleeding set in, from a large vein giving way in the leg, and tho deceased never rallied. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and the coroner added a suggestion that steps should be taken to paling the fence around the course, so that similar accidents might be avoided
