"THE AMAZING DR CLITTERHOUSE"

Gripping Mystery Play at Comedy

Edwin Styles was indeed an amazing Dr Clitterhouse by his skilful interpretation at the Comedy Theatre on Saturday night of the role of the amiable and prosperous medico whose criminal research gripped the audience throughout the three acts of Barre Lyndon's novel and thrilling Play.

Dr Clitterhouse, after completing four jewel thefts during his study of passions and emotions of a law-breaker, crashed into the underworld to dispose of his "swag" to a fence." Becoming leader of a gang, members of which during four months of nefarious exploits are subjected to medical experiments, the doctor directs the biggest for robbery in crime history.

In the final act Dr Clitterhouse seizes a chance to complete his pathological studies by committing murder, a crime which he said provided the ultimate sensation for the wrongdoer. Reactions of learned counsel and police give a fitting finish to a well-balanced story. Action of the play moves quickly from the doctor's consulting-room, to an underworld club, a Bloomsbury flat, the roof of a fur warehouse, and back to the doctor's room.

The only two female roles were well played by Gwenda Wilson, as Dr Clitterhouse nurse, and Madge Aubrey, as Daisy, whose friendship toward a "fence," Benny Kellerman (excellently portrayed by Eric Reiman), wages in favour of the doctor after his successful exploits in crime. Presentation was kept at a high level by the eight remaining members of the cast, and order of merit is Keith Eden (Scotland Yard inspector). Charles Zoli (ex-convict). Reg Newson (a KC), John Stacy, Les Gordon, and Campbell Gray (underworld members), and Ron Turner and Don Sharp (police officers)
