BREEDING HISTORY OF CAULFIELD WINNERS

By CHIRON

Kinder gold and Gold Hazard, two of the winners at Caulfield on Saturday,

were bred at Northwood Park, Kinder gold by Mr A. G. Hunter, and Gold Hazard by Mr L. Sluice. Another Goulburn Valley bred winner was Old England, who was bred at The Nook, formerly owned by Mr A. T. Creswick, by Mr R. W. McLean.

Kindergold, who is a brother to Kinderchlck, was sold as a yearling to Mr O. R. Porter for 475 gun. He is by Kinderscout (son of Bold Archer) from Gold Chick, by Wind-bag (son of Magpie) from Chickling, by Spearhead (son of Spearmint) from Canterbury Chick (imp), by Chaucer from Game Hen, by Gallinule.

Canterbury Chick, who was a winner in Perth, was imported there by Mr C. Watson, and is one of the few daughters of Chaucer to come to Australia. Mr Ben Chaffey purchased her, and she was in the Sherwood Park Stud when All Black was there. Mr Chaffey sold her to Mr Norman Falkiner, but after a brief stay at Noorilim, Mr Falkiner passed her on in foal to Spearhead to Mr W. D. Leslie, who owned her when she died. The Spearhead foal she was carrying was Chickling, who was a useful mare and was second to Miss Disraeli in the Oaks.

Chickling bred a good staying mare in Cackle, and Gold Chick. The first foal from Gold Chick was the Kalgoorlie Cup winner Moorinary, who was followed by Kinderchick and Kindergold.

Gold Hazard is a half-brother to that good staying handicap per-former Son of Aureus, who won the Hotham Handicap three years ago and was second to Skipton in the Melbourne Cup. He also won the Adelaide Cup. Gold Hazard is by Hellespont (son of Pharos) from Golden Betty, by Violoncello (son of Valens) from Banns, by Bronzino (son of Marco) from Istria, by Haut Brion from Trieste, by Chester. Trieste was so brilliant that she was known as "flying Trieste." Her daughter, Istria, was a Doncaster Handicap winner, and Violoncello won the Caulfield Cup. Another distinguished member of this family was Carlita, one of the best staying mares in recent times in Australia.

Old England, who cost 900 gus as a yearling, belongs to a family established in Australia when Mr William McCulloch imported the Arbitrator mare Bright Eyes about 50 years ago. Her daughter, Bright Beauty, won the Bagot Handicap and other races. Bright Beauty was a sister to Attrac-tion, whose daughter, Tuning Fork, became the dam of that great sprinter Greenstead, the most distinguished member of the family.

Old England is by St Magnus (son of Sansovino) from Regalic, by Seeliger (son of Clarissimus) from Nancy M by Comedy King from

Beauty Bright, by Positano from Bright Beauty, by Pilgrim's Progress from Bright Eyes (imp), by Arbitrator.

Approve, winner of the Ormond Handicap (1st div), was bred at St Albans Stud by Messrs H. G. Raymond and Ranken and was sold as a yearling to Mrs J. J. Kitson for 400 gns. He is by Enfield (son of Winalot) from Sweet Memories, by Gay Lothario (son of Gay Crusader) from Sweet Marguerite, by Flippant (son of Marcovil) from Doux Verre (imp), by St Martin. Sweet Memories was a brilliant two-year-old a few years ago, when she won the Debutante Stakes and Maribyrnong Plate. Sweet Memories is a full sister to Elite, a winner of the Sires' Produce Stakes and Cantala Stakes.
