BASEBALL WIN TO S.A.

N.S.W. Surprised

Cool fielding and aggressive batting against New South Wales gave South Australia its first win for the series-and also put Victoria back into the fight for the Claxton Shield-when the Austra-lian baseball carnival was continued at the Albert ground yesterday.

South Australia's win means that New

South Wales must defeat Western Aus-tralia, considered to be the strongest team competing, when they meet to-day, be-fore it can earn the right to play off against Western Australia for the shield on Saturday. If it loses, Victoria, which has a bye, will meet Western Australia in

the final match.

Conditions yesterday made good base-ball almost impossible, the Queensland players in particular being affected by the muddy ground, and slippery ball. They were not able to give Victoria any opposi-tion, and lost by 25 runs to none. Be-cause of the state of the Albert ground the games drawn for to-day have been changed to the South Melbourne Cricket-ground, the first game starting at 12.30

p.m.

Victoria took complete control of the Queensland battery, and scored almost at will. Queensland was at sea in the mud, and this, combined with Victoria's splen-did infield play, prevented it from open-ing its account. Victoria's 12 runs in its fourth innings were scored mainly on errors when the Queensland players failed to hold the greasy ball. Scores:-
