CLASHES IN

MEXICO

WILL PRESIDENT

RESIGN?

MEXICO CITY, Tuesday.

"Right wing" newspapers report the possibility that the President of Mexico (General Cardenas) may resign in favour of Senor Maximino Avila Camacho, Gov-ernor of the State of Puebla.

Government troops had been assembled at strategic centres following rumours of a revolutionary move planned by Mexico's "strong man," General Saturnio Cedillo.

Rumours that the President might re-sign followed a conference between General Cardenas, Senor Camatho, and three former Presidents of Mexico. The tense atmosphere has been aggravated by a violent clash at the University of Mexico between Socialist and Rightist students, in which a dozen students were wounded in an exchange of pistol shots. The Socialists barricaded themselves in buildings, and finally were dislodged by the police.

London Legation Closed

LONDON, Tuesday.

Surprise and regret at the decision of the Mexican Government to close its lega-tion in London was expressed in the House of Commons by the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler).

In replying to a question, Mr. Butler said that he could not predict any further action which might be taken, but the Government would naturally continue to use its best endeavours to protect the sub-stantial British commercial interests in

Mexico.
