TV's Penguin Awards

MELBOURNE: A television drama program about lesbianism scooped the pool last night in the Annual Penguin Awards.

The program, 'The Alternative', was shown by HSV 7 a few months ago.

It was produced by Gemini Prod

uctions and was about an unwed moth

er who chose a relationship with another woman rather than face the bashing of the father of her child.

Wendy Hughes, who played the mother, was named best actress, Peter Adam, who was her lover, best actor

and Alwyn Kurts, in the same program, best supporting actor.

The program also won for Gemini Productions the $3,000 Australian Film Commission Prize as the best adult drama of the year.

Channel 9's Don Lane picked up a Penguin as the best variety-musical performer for the second year running.

The awards, given by the Television Society of Australia, were presented before an industry audicncc of nearly 600 people at the Total Theatre last night.
