FINE DISPLAY BY RUSSELL

From Cricket to Weddings

Bill Russell, who made a splendid 104 for Brunswick against University, would be welcomed by any district club. Some years ago he had a season with Fitzroy, and then decided to return to Brunswick, with which club he made a sub-district

record score of 257 not out against; Camberwell earlier in the season. Although slightly built, he hits the

ball hard, with leg shots, drives,. and pulls his most prolific strokes, i Bill Johnston, who bowled 10 no

balls in the last match, was called only twice on Saturday for dragging ; over the line. When his turn came to bat he hit a ball over the fence, and then lost his wicket.

The Rev Fraser Withington opened the innings for Hawthorn-East Melbourne on Saturday, and, after making one run he was bowled. Then he hurried to All Saints' Church, where he had to officiate at three weddings.

Alan Dick (University) was applauded for two splendid catches off his own bowling. He had previously missed Russell at fine leg when that player was 64.

The Richmond Essendon game had many purple patches. Mathers, the Richmond wicket-keeper, took two remarkable catches on the leg side to dismiss Hamence and Meuleman. Doug Williams followed his good

bowling by taking three good i catches, and Jim Smith, running about 50 yards, took another that was applauded. For the other side McGuire took a spectacular catch near point.

Stan Palmer, one of the best bats-men in sub-district ranks, won the toss for Brunswick at University for the third time this season. He wanted to lose it, as he had an injured leg, which he hoped would be well enough to permit him to bat next week. However, he could not

afford to lose the opportunity of using the good wicket, and dropped I out. This gave Baines (who, like

Russell, played for Fitzroy previously) his opportunity, and Barnes I gave an excellent display in making 74. I Laurie Nash, former international, who is now out of the Army, played for the old South Melbourne players against the present team yesterday. He made 38 and also bowled well. The moderns won. scoring 280 (Cornelius 102. Howard 65) to 216 (Nash 38, Lawson 32, R. Hassett 28, Barnes 27, Dr Park 22). Hassett, Morton, Davidson, Purdy, and Nash took the wickets.
