FULL FORWARD FOR NORTH

Acting Captains

For more than a year North Mel-bourne have been hoping to have Harry Gaw in as full-forward, but injury has kept him out. He is find-ing form in the seconds, with which team he kicked six goals on Satur-day. He must soon be given his

chance.

Pannarn, * Collingwood captain, could not play on Saturday, but should be well enough to play this week. Williams led the side and Mears filled the vacancy. McLaren (Glen Alvie),-whose clearance is now in order, might also be chosen.

South will be stronger this week, as Nash will be fit, and Pat Leahy, who showed excellent form with the seconds, may return. Guyatt (Army and W Aust) kicked seven goals with the seconds in good style. Mullenger, however, broke down again.

Two changes had to be made by Richmond. Fraser has had a minor operation on the eye, and Hull was not available. Turner came in as full-back for his first game, but dis-located his finger in the first five minutes, to be replaced by Kemp, while Smith also played. Wiggins may return as full-back this week, when Broadstock, K. Cook, Fraser, and Hull will also be available.

Laurie Nash's hand injury kept him out of South's side, and Coyle came in. Jack Williams was sent to centre half-forward, and played his best game this season. Harrison could not get leave, and Dally O'Brien, who was unfit, decided to play and lead the North side.

In addition to some good players being out, several of Melbourne's key men had an off day. For some minutes in the third quarter they had only 15 men standing. Kennedy went off with an ankle injury, but returned 10 minutes later and kicked two goals from a forward pocket. While he was away two of his team mates collided and were on the ground for some minutes. Baggott, La Fontaine, .and Lathem should be fit this week.

McLean and Price were Carlton's cap-tain and vicecaptain re-spectively on Saturday, when Chitty (who should play again this week) and Green were out.

The young tigers have stamina. On Saturday Ron Evans, who is on the supple

mentary list, played in the "curtainraiser," but was taken off in the last quarter to fill a vacancy with the seconds, with which team he played all through to be one of the best players. Richmond seconds had only 15 men, as there are no fewer than l8 injuries on the senior list.

Gordon ("Whoppa") Lane was given still another assignment by Essendon. This time he was placed in the centre-when Pearson was re-placed in the third quarter-and did well. Essendon hope that he can re-main there, even if Griggs returns, which is a possibility.
