Not in Our Day.

Thomas Chapman, who discovered gold at Daisy Hill, Victoria, in 1848, and sold to Mrs. Brentaini, in Collins street, a nugget of 16oz., took fright and bolted to Sydney in the Sea Horse, fearful of the authorities, and La Trobe sent 16 mounted native police, under Captain Dana, to prevent any further digging at Daisy Hill. This story from "Gold, the Touchstone," by Mr. Allan W. Dawes, In the Centenary number of "The Aus-tralasian," indicates how our early authorities regarded our gold as an asset. The number, which is now on sale, con-tains more than 200 rare and valuable historic pictures.
