TOWER OF ST. PHILIPS, CHURCH HILL, SYDNEY

This is an artistically de-signed tower, but unfor-tunately the four termin-ating pinnacles do not grace the existing tower, as they have had to be re-moved owing to the bad state of preservation, and the parishioners have not found the money to re-place them. This is one

of the first churches of Sydney and has many points of historic interest attaching to it, including the fact that the peal of bells was casi by the fam-ous bell founder, Thomas Mears, who cast Big Ben of Westminster and also the bells of St. Mary's and St. Benedict's, Syd-ney. There has been some talk of allocating this church site to St. Andrew's Cathedral, which would be most unwise as it is in- adequate in size for the needs of the cathedral, whilst this small Church graces the site. With the advent of the City Rail-way and trains rushing to and fro across the bridge the position of Church Hill will not be an enviable one from a devotional point of view.
