Goody Gossamer's Rhymes. THE FLOURY BAKER

A gay floury baker was singing his song; It's a song, or a drone, or a hum — 'I'm going to be happy each summer day long, Just hark to my drumming so steady and strong, With a zum and a zum and a zum.

'Three long years I stayed in my home under-ground, Like a cricket half-dead and quite mum, Now up to the sunshine my way I have found, And each summer hour I shall fill with my sound, With a zum and a zum and a zum. "Just four weeks I have to enjoy the clear light, And to play on my wonderful drum, So I'll drone and I'll drone while the world is all bright, And if it keeps warm I shall drone all the night, With a zum and a zum and a zum!" Alas! A grey bird then came flying around, And he heard that monotonous hum, Just one swoop he gave and his dinner he found, While the gay gauzy wings fluttered down to the ground, And no more of a zum and a zum! So after three years in his cold tunnel grey, Where never the sunshine could come, Our poor floury baker had only one day To drone in the sunshine and merrily play. Alas for the zum and the zum!
