PLENARY COUNCIL.

Conversazione in the Town Hall.

A large and brilliant crowd assembled last night in the Town Hall at the invi tation of a committee of gentlemen ' to meet his Eminence the Cardinal and *he Hierarchy of Australia.' The hosts on the occasion were Sir P. A.

J ennings, Sir W. P. Manning the Hon. Thos. Dalton {president of the committee), the Hon. Geo. Day, the Hon. C. Q. Hey don, the Hon. John Hughes, the Hon. E* E. O'Connor, the Hon. John T. Toohey, Dr. J. Donovan, Captain T. O'Sullivan, Messrs. John Bridge, Clarence bridge, J. Fitzpatrick, B. W. 'Poley, F. B. Freehill, J. P. Garvan, V. Heaton, P. E. Larkin, H. M. Makinson, £. Prendergast, Frank Punch, T. M. Slattery, J. L. Watkins. and J. L. Mullins, the last-named acting as honorary secretary. The principal among the invited guests of the evening were the members of the Plenary Council, now sitting, in Sydney, and in cluded the President, Cardinal Moran, the Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Carr), the Archbishop of Brisbane (Dr. Dunne), the Archbishop of Hobart (Dr. Murphy), the Archbishop of Adelaide (Dr. O'Eeilly), while the Episcopal representatives of the various sees included the Sight Eev. Drs. Salvado, Murray, Lanigan, Torregiani, Cani, Moore, Seville, Byrne, Uibney, Dunne, Corbett, Doyle, Hutchinson, Higgins (auxiliary Bishop to the Cardinal), Delaney, and Gallagher. Besides these there were present : Con signor O'Brien, Dr. O'Haran, the Dsans of Armidale and tiathurslb, Archdeacon Bus tell, the Eev. The Cardinal in his crimson robes, and the Bishops in their black soutanes and purple mantles, looked most imposing, and the large number of ecclesiastics who were present, and who mingled cheerfully with the crowd, gave a most unusual air to the informal and thoroughly enjoyable function. The hall was beautifully decorated with palms and flowers, the vice regal dais being handsomely draped with art muslin, and an interesting programme of music was given by the city organist on the great organ. Excellent refresh ments were served during the evening, and no pains were spared by the mem bers of the committee, especially the hard working hon. secretary, Mr. J. L. Mullins, in attending to the comfort of their guests. The affair was one of the most successful that has been ever given in Sydney, the clergy and laity- alike seeming to enjoy an evening spent in pleasant and friendly intercourse. His Excellency the Governor and the Hon. Margaret Brand arrived a little before 9 p.m., Lady Hampden, however, was suffering from the effects of all the exertions she has undergone since her arrival, and was not able to be present. Mr. Gathorne Hardy, Captain Sloane Stan ley, A.D.C., and Lieut, the Hon. F. Eger tou, .A.D.C., were in' attendance. The Vice-regal who party were received on their arrival by the Hon. Thomas Dalton, Mr. J. L. Mullins, the Eight Eev. Bishop Hig gins, the Very iiev. Monsignor O'Brien, and the Very Eev.
