HOW SKIPTON GOT. ITS NAME It was originally intended that Skipton should race under the name of Monaco. Mrs. Kitson, his owner, when visiting Monte Carlo while on.a world tour, was so favorably impressed by Monaco that she resolved to call her next racehorse after the protectorate. She actually applied for the name, but as the Vichy government, which protects Monaco, was anti-British, she thought it might not seem the right thing to adopt such a title, and she withdrew the application. Several other names were proposed and discarded until finally she decided upon Skipton, which is the name of a small country .town near Ballarat. "This, town", says Mrs., Kitson, "is a pretty little place with a river and overhanging willows".
