HUTCHINSON 100, i BREASLEY AND ;

PIGGOTT 99 i

LONDON, Sunday (AAP). — Australian jockey Ron Hutchinson cracked the century in the jockeys' championship yesterday in a photo finish with Britain's Lester Piggott.

Hutchinson and Piggott were both on 99 when they started the Diadem Stakes

at Ascot.

Piggott's mount, Desert Call, led all the way until the last few strides of the race, when Hutchinson's mount, Great Bear, got in front to win by a head in a photo finish.

The win allowed Hutchinson, who has never won the championship to beat Piggott, the reigning champion, to the century mark.

Another Australian, Scobie Breasley, who won on Reform to bring his total to 99, watched the race from the sidelines.

When the day opened the score was Hutchinson 99, Breasley 98 and Piggott 96.

Hutchinson had five rides during the day and won on Great Bear at 11-2 in the last race to get his century.

Breasley took his total to 99 on Reform in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes when the 6-5 favourite turned the race into a procession.

Three wins to Piggott

Australian jockey George Moore, on St. Chad, was level with Reform at the turn for home, but Reform strode away to score by 10 lengths from Track Spare, who kept St Chad out of second place by about five lengths.

Piggott came from behind in the championship with three wins in five rides yesterday.

All three were favourites: Bamboozle (7/2), Denosa (15/8), and Remand (18/8).

Bookmakers now make Piggott odds-on favourite for the jockeys' championship.
