Mr Misko

UKRAINIAN FESTIVAL

For Mr S. Misko, the road to Black Mountain, ACT, led through three countries of Europe — Czechoslovakia, Poland and Austria.

With local variations, the same story could be told of 11,000 of his fellow Ukrainians who

emigrated to Australia.

Because they generally feel happy about their decision, Australia's Ukrainian community will hold a national festival in Canberra from August 25 to

31.

The festival, organised by Mr Misko, who works in CSIRO Laboratories at Black Mountain, will mark 20 years since the first Ukrainians reached

Australia.

"To me, Australia has become a second Ukraine", Mr Misko said yesterday.

Features of the festival will be an exhibition of Ukrainian crafts, and, on August 26, a gala evening of national folk-singing and dancing at

the Canberra Theatre.

Some 250 Ukrainian performers are being brought to Canberra from Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, for the evening, which will be opened by the Minister for Immigration, Mr Snedden.

Michael Kmit, the recent winner of the national $500 Melrose Art Prize, and himself a Ukrainian, will exhibit paintings in the craft and culture display in the Theatre Centre gallery.
