WODEN VALLEY

HIGHWAY'S

OFFICIAL NAME YARRA GLEN

The parkway through the Woden Valley has been formally named Yarra Glen - with no suffix such as street, highway, drive or avenue.

The road has been named after Yarra Glen home stead originally owned by the Campbell family, early settlers in the area.

The usual suffixes were dropped because it was thought the name sounded better alone, a spokesman for the Department of the Interior said last night.

The highway eventually will extend from Adelaide

iAvenue. to the farthest

southern suburbs of the Woden development, a major part of Canberra's road system.

The first section of the expressway is under construction at the Adelaide Avenue end.

The new name was officially given in the Commonwealth Gazette yesterday.

Oilier

names

Other names gazetted yesterday included street names for Woden Valley suburbs, most of which are already in existence and already have name signs erected on them.

The lists show that streets in Mawson arc named after people with a connection with Antarctica: in Garran the streets arc named after writers, poets

and dramatists.

In Lyons, named for the former Prime Minister. Mr J. A. Lyons, who came from Tasmania, the street names are Tasmanian place names.

In the suburb of Chiflcy, named after former Prime Minister, Mr Ben Chiflcy. who was closely associated with establishment of the Australian National University, the streets are named after people connected with Australian universities.

South Australian administrators and pioneers have given their names to streets in Torrcns, which is named for Sir Robert Torrens. a Premier of SA in the 1850s.

The names of public servants and other men who worked with Sir George Pearcc. a senator and Federal Minister earlier this century, are used in Pearce isurhiirb.
