An Adunde Cup c indicate in Woorooma was successful in the Mentone Handicap on Saturday The field comprised 10 inn near, and AV001 comes was a good perform once, as he was at the tail of the hole for the first two furlongs The gradually made up his. fees ay, and, finishing strongly., won ME the something in hand from Corio boree and Bluff Ills form was a considerable improvement on that shown by him at Epsom the. previous featured ly, but that was his first public, appeal made for some time, and he was possibly in want of -j see In en. case, Bluff rather dearer closed the field it Epsom by The strong pace he set from the jump off Wooloowin, who on the Moonee Valley Cup last year, is by Wallace from Bon Mot 111 .Aicutelicoii, and was bred by Mr R G Row the colt's weight in the Adel aide Cup is Sat 511), and as he appeals to becoming on Mat he has a decided (chance in that event He will leave for Adelaide this week

The large, field for the Mentone Hindi

captain 1 miners was rather 1 compliment to the handicapper, Mr W A Menzies, who was present at the meeting having just returned from Sydney after witnessing the first three days' 1 icing of the AJC meeting that the event was considered open was sufficiently demonstrated by the fact that until a few minutes from the start of the race odds of 7 to 1 were offered on the held Lientnallv Woorooma is cut out of favourite -at 6 to 1

The Passing, 11 since j year old gelding by Bobadil from the Parisienne team of The Gaiety Girl and Chumant), by I Lenton made a bold attempt to win 1 double at Mentone on '"titurd ly After a good race he just beat To in the Hills Handicap and an hour afterwards was brought out for the Walter Handicap With his 7lb penalty he only had 7st 8lb to can-, and was made i strongfavoiuite Perilous being next 111 demand The Parisian looked like winning a hundred yards Horn home, but Perilous, finishing well, caught him on the post, and Air ISoim m Wilson the judge, was unable to separate them The owners could not come to in agreement to divide, and the race was in off at the end of the day. As the Pirrsiin had ahead, inn two rates, the run off looked a good thing for Petilotis but the bookmakers were in a liberal frame of mind, and took 0 to that

he did not win It was no race this time, is Perilous whose jockey lost a stirrup in the start of the original contest, led all the war, and won pulling up "this is the first nee won by Perrlous He is 11 big bay colt by the imported Carbine horse Pistol from Alvcarj, by Eiridspord from Queen Bee, who runs back to imported Crin, dam of Newminster Perilous exist Mr W I coming 400 guineas as a yearling He has so far been a somewhat costly horse, as Mr I coming had previously backed him on several occasions The colt may win next Wednesday at Aspendale-park, and after that he will, according to present in (cations he went out for a spell He is, like Worn come, to lined by R Bl rdfiekl

Weights for the Ballan races which were published on Saturday, were declared by Mr J li Davis at pm on Friday Coquette and Joan, two of the winners at tail I rl on I Friday afternoon, June, therefore, neared penalties for the Ballan meeting

'

Prince, who ran off in the AJC First Steeplechase at Randwick, has. returned to

Melbourne

The owner of Munro was fined £2 for late scratching connection with the Welter Plate at Mentone on Saturday

Enchant ran a very bad race at Williamstown on Easter Monday, but was equal to winning the Hurdle Race at Mentone on Saturday from Lal skin, and the hot favourite Sienna, who happens to be a pool weight carrier Huchon, it turns out, broke a blood vessel in the course of the Williamstown race

Between the first and second race at Mentone on Saturday an innovation in the shape of a "rough up" gallop amongst five callings, was introduced, and created some interest The youngsters- concerned are the property of Mr G P Payne, who comes from New Zealand, where the practice of spin ling yearlings 111 public is fairly common The five that appeared on Saturday were bred in New Zealand, and they com-passed a colt by Obligato from Dreamland, a colt by Stepniak from Gipsy Countess, a colt by Advance from Bonnette n filly by Soult from Helen M'Gregor, and a hill by St Ambrose from Success They all looked in nice condition, and with two exceptions, are fairly well grown They were galloped from the straight entrance to the winning post about two for longs and after getting off bully, the Obligato colt finished in good style and reached the win ning post first He is only about 14 1 hands high, but is smart looking The best tal

roper of the lot appeared to be the Soult

fill

Two of the winners at Mentone on Saturday The Piuisinn and Helena, were sired by Bobadil Helena, who won the Welter Purse, is only a pony Another Bobadil to win on Saturday was "Cllengown, who took

a race at Launceston

'1916 hero of the A J C meeting was undoubtedly Trafalgar He ran on each of life four days of the meeting On the first day he took the Autumn Stakes on the second day the Sydney Cup, on the third day after being interfered with by Lord Nolan) finished third in the Cumberland Stakes while on (the concluding day he accounted for the three mile race the A.J.C. Plate Over this distance backers on the spot, as well as in Melbourne took the new that Lord Nolan would down Tiafil gar but the Melbourne Cup winner was beaten by North as well as Trafalgar This certainly bears out the opinion that with a deal lim, both J iifnlgn and North would have beaten Lord Nolan in the Cumberland Stakes When Trafalgar ran 111 the Champion Stakes he came! ed up after entering the straight, went on that morning three miles looked a trade too far for him. He him, howof ei, come on 1 lot since then There has been some negotiations for his purchase for India, but the Messrs Mitchell, his owners", would now require to be tempted with a very big offer before consenting to part with him

Hoax, the sister to Demons, scored her third win at Die AID meeting, when she got home in the Rous Handicap on Saturday The race was confined to three-yearolds and Monobcl, at ist 121 was most fancied by backers, but he has been a disappointing animal, and once more failed to get a place Five Clown followed Hoax home, as he did in the Maiden Stakes On Saturday he was meeting Hoax on 10lb better terms and S Ferguson was substituted for J, Dillon

The only favourite to come to the assistance of backers at Randwick on Saturday was Kuala Lumpur, who started at a short price for the Steeplechase During the four days of the meeting but five fa von tiles won out of 24 races, willie outsiders frequently cropped up It must have been a splendid meeting for the bookmakers A few Victorians were back on Saturday They w case quite satisfied to stand on their losses, without waiting for "records j day" One Victorian, however or was lucky He recently made some sensational wagers ever The Cothbrack at Sunbury, and at Randwick had substantial wins 01 or Lord Nolan in the St Leger and Trafalgar in the Sydney

Cup

Considering that the team was a small one, Victorian horses did very well at the AJC meeting Trafalgar accounted for since good rains, Old Cliauuic for the First Hurdle Bate Saverne for the-. first Steeplechase find Kuala Lumpur i -2 The Second Steeplechase The Sidney i-iocpli-cliusers are a very poor lot, and there are very few of them at that In both Steeple ships Melbourne homes filled the places The Sydney-made Thelma Dashwood was killed in Saturdays event She was 11 six year old mine, by Moslem from Beryl, and was owned by "(iii A Cashel

Wallace was. the most successful sire at the A.J.C. meeting I realise won three, and Lord Wallace and lace for linen Gi îflon had a smart 1 representative in Hoax, winner of three races Hunan the Don

easter Handicap]) winner, mel Huco Miner of the 1 long Handicap give Hill on 1 good nihcitiseintnl Fine Blue and two winning representatives and the following sires one

with, me - Gozo, Su Scott Pell inn len a son. Maurice. BaYcifluk. His Reverence

Siege Gun, St Alwynne Holbrook, Mikado Jl Beauchamp, and binnie

The riding hon ours at the A J C meeting were taken by W H billilli who rode J i sugar to reckon on three occasions, and also got Baw Bee home in the main Han cheap C Bolton rode three winners, M Connell two, and the following jockeys one each, viz -T Cahill. D M Carthy, D Callinan, 1 Hood C O Davis J Lightfoot, (F Phillips, N Wood Rains Cameron, It Lewis, W M Lachlan, E 'Banks, J Smith, and 1 Pile

Three prominent horses to be unplaced in different events at Randwick on Saturday were the man Parsee, and Malting

A feature of the A J C meeting was the success of three year olds Apart from the two races, the St Leger and Rous Hand

cap, confined to horses of that age, eight races were taken by three year olds three by trafalgar two by Hoax, and one each by Hyman, Bruce, and ]}uvv Sec The only horses over three years old to win on the flat were Param, Montcalm, North, Lord Wallace, and Blue Garments

The question of two year old supremacy is usually settled by the VRC and A J C Autumn meetings, but both meetings are over, and it is still an open one Mala and Sunny South stood well out from the other two year olds at the VEC meeting Main did not go to Randwick while Sunny South performed disappointingly time Melbourne

men returned from Sydney, report that Sums South was said to be suffering from an affection of the kidneys before the AJC meeting. It was thought when the meeting stated that he was all right, but, judging by his form, he was far from being himself Prince 1 Poole and Malt King were a couple of smart two year olds that the meeting brought to light Pumo 1 oole, life Man, is on the small side The question upon which is the most be cl\ youngster to turn out the rick three year old is, as in cheated open, but Sunny South, fit and well, is not a bad one to rely on

The Grace-park tournament was resumed on Saturday, when the " management was again favoured with ideal weather and a large attend once. The great event of the afternoon was the final of the doubles championship between A. W. Dunlop R. W. Heath and E. T. Barnard!, Lycett. Dunlop was not be good as usual in his driving strokes, and Barnard, except in patches, was also below par, but Heath and Lycett were at the top of their game, The M.C.C. champion pair proved themselves too strong in the first Bel, which they Won at 0-3, but the second was more closely contested, and Barnard and Lj'cctt had a chance of getting the score to five games all, of which they did not take advantage, and lost at 6-1. Tile third set had barely commenced when Lycett, in attempting to turn quickly on the grass at the side of the court, came down, and sprained

his ankle so badly that further play was out of the question, and, although Dtlnlop-lleath were loth to accept a victory under such conditions, both Barnard and Lycett realised that with two sets against them it was almost hopeless for them to win means rose, and they therefore returned, By this victory Dunlop undefeated have won out
