FIRST WAY SECTION OPEN TO-DAY

The National Capital Development Commission will open the first section of the new Parkes Way at midday to-day

The four-lane way sweeps along the north shore of the future Canberra Lake.

The first section will link the Russell Hill roundabout

and Scott's Crossing road near

St. John's Church.

The way eventually will connect the aerodrome and Russell Hill areas with Com-

monwealth Avenue.

A Commission spokesman said yesterday plans were being drawn up to continue

the first section to Common-

wealth Avenue.

Until the full project was completed, traffic would Constitution Avenue between Anzac Park and London Cir-cuit to reach the City.

The spokesman said Parkes Way was designed as a high standard, limited access road to be part of a major arterial

road system.

He said no direct access would be available from

Parkes Way to the Lake fore-

shore.

The foreshore would be reached through underpasses, such as the one near Old-

field's Cottage,

Tree and grass planting around the way was well ad-vanced in keeping with Com-mission policy of carrying out landscaping works as part of construction jobs, he added.
