THE CATHOLIC HIERARCHY.

COMPLIMENTARY CONVERSAZIONE. BRILLIANT GATHERING.

One of the most brilliant social events wit-nessed in Sydney was the "conversazione" tendered by the laity of Sydney to the Hier-archy of Australia on last Monday evening in the Town Hall. It was estimated that not less than 1500 guests were present. Together with His Eminence the Cardinal, all the bishops, with exception of the Archbishops of Adelaide and Hobart, were at the social gathering, as

were also assembled on the occasion the Clergy attending the Plenary Synod, and a large num-ber of the Priests of the Archdiocese. The scene, on the arrival of His Excellency the Governor and the Hon. Margaret Brand, who were accompanied by Capt. Sloane Stanley and Lieutenant the Hon. F. W. S. Egerton,     A.D.C.'s, and the Hon. Gathorne-Hardy (private secretary), was decidedly picturesque and beautiful. The Vice Regal party was re-     ceived at the main entrance by Sir P. A. Jen-nings, Sir W. P. Manning, Mr. T. Dalton, M.L.C., Mr. John Hughes, M.L.C., Mr. R. E. O'Connor, M.L.C., and Mr. John Lane Mullins, as representing the organising committee; and Bishop Higgins, Monsignor O'Brien, and the Very Rev. Dr. O'Haran, as representing the Cardinal. The vice-regal party were escorted to the dais erected under the southern gallery, Mr. Wiegand playing the National Anthem on the great organ. Close by the dais, waiting to receive them, were the Cardinal, the Chief Justice and Lady Darley, Major-General   Hutton, the Bishops and other prominent clergy, as well as other members of the organ-ising committee. Lady Hampdon was to have attended the conversazione, but was prevented doing so at the last moment owing to a slight indisposition. General regret was expressed

at the absence of her Ladyship. A number of the guests were introduced to the Governor. The Hon. Margaret Brand was presented with a handsome bouquet on arrival, and Lady Dar-ley was also the recipient of another equally handsome. The promoters of this great social gathering were Sir P. A. Jennings, Sir Wm. P. Manning, Messrs. Thomas Dalton, M.L.C., George Day, M.L.C., C. G. Heydon, M.L.C., John Hughes, M.L.C., R. E. O'Connor, M.L.C., John T. Toohey, M.L.C., John Bridge, Clarence Bridge, Dr. John Donovan, Messrs. James Fitzpatrick, B. W. Foley, F. B. Freehill, James P. Garvan,   Valentine Heaton, P. R. Larkin, H. M. Makin-son, John Lane Mullins, Capt. T. O'SulIivan, Messrs. R. Prendergast, Frank Punch, T. M. Slattery, John L. Watkins. On Mr. John Lane Mullins devolved the onerous duties of secretary, and he discharged them with marked courtesy. The committee of organisation and managemenit received the warmest congratulations on the splendid success of their efforts. Every thing was perfect, the decorations, refresh-ments, and general arrangements meriting the highest praise. During the evening M. Wiegand played several selections on the grand organ, which were much appreciated. His numbers included "Grand Marche Pontificale et Jubilaire dedie a Sa Saintete Leon XIII." (A. Wiegand), "Communion in G" (Ed. Batiste), "Selections         of Old Irish Melodies," Fantasia Operatic," "Faust" (Ch. Gounod), Improvisation of "Adeste Fideles," Idyll No. 1, " The Storm"   (A. Wiegand), "Communion in F" (Jules Grison), Orizaba Gavotte (A. Wiegand), and "Coronation March" (Meyerbeer). The vice- regal party left shortly before ten o'clock, but the majority of the guests, including Cardinal Moran and the bishops, remained until 10.30. Sir Patrick Jennings, who has not been seen in the social world for some time, was in full court costume, and was seated near the vice- regal dais, where he was constantly surrounded by friends.
